As a youth, Guy Dobbins was part of an acapella group called the Wisdoms. They sang on street corners, at school events and won a contest to do a Coca-Cola commercial for a local radio station in Akron, Ohio. The Wisdoms performed in the lounges of The Brown Derby restaurants in Ohio. The group even cut a recording, but it didn’t get much airplay by disc jockeys, so Aunt Hazel got all the copies.
While performing at a Goodyear Tire and Rubber event in Akron, Guy met several of its employees and so began his career in the tire industry. Guy traveled globally and internationally for Goodyear, Suburban Tire, and Purcell Tire to gold, copper, and coal mines supervising their tire inventories and service. He also managed several retail and commercial locations, winning multiple awards, including one from the United States Army Yuma Proving grounds.
Upon retiring to Sun City, Guy joined the Piano Club, eventually becoming treasurer. However, he soon discovered he was much better at banging on things – hence, his drumming career began.
Guy dove into drumming through extensive training with Drumeo in Abbotsford, BC, masterclasses with Todd Sucherman (drummer for Styx), and his band mates who also have master musical knowledge.
Now, as the contact member for Rockin’ Oldies, Guy enjoys the performances, the camaraderie with the band, the chance to meet and entertain new people, and to see people singing and dancing along with their favorite tunes from the past.
